The hobby of collecting may deal with almost any subject and consists of acquiring specific items based on the particular interests of the collector. The real joy of collecting is a lifetime of pleasure and becoming more
knowledgeable about the items you are collecting. When wondering what to collect look for items that attract your attention. You may collect art, porcelain dolls, stamps, coins, figurines, baseball cards or any other number of items. Collect whatever it is that
excites you most, remember that people are collectors and collecting doesn't necessarily have to be expensive.
I know one woman who collects rocks from each state she has visited. She usually looks for a rock that resembles the shape of the state. Sometimes if she knows someone that's traveling to a state she hasn't yet visited she makes a request of them to bring her a
rock back. Her collection costs her nothing, though it likely takes up a lot of space.
My mother collected Barbie dolls and a few porcelain dolls. She enjoyed them very much and proudly displayed them. She had paid as little as $5.00, and as much as $30.00 for her dolls, and had about 40 of them when she passed on. We sold them on Ebay and made
much more than her initial investment for the dolls. Of course, her investment was for pleasure not income.
The most popular fields in collecting have specialized commercial dealers that trade in the items being collected, as well as related accessories. Many of these dealers started as collectors themselves, then turned their hobby into a profession. To encourage
collecting, manufacturers often create an entire series of a given collectible, with each item differentiated in some fashion. Here is where you can find many of these types of collectibles. |
