In 1875, Peter Merz, a Chicago
pharmacist, opened Merz Apothecary with a clientele consisting
mainly of European immigrants. The Apothecary was passed down
through three generations and in 1972 was about to close because
of no successor. A recent Pharmacy school graduate and Pakistani
immigrant, Abdul Qaiyum, whose family's own Pakistani business
focused on traditional natural remedies, heard about it's plight
and fell in love with the store so purchased it.
Despite the growth and attention, the store has not lost focus of
the original concept of the apothecary. The staff hails from
around the world and speaks seven languages altogether. Although
the international customers no longer make up the majority of the
clientele, their numbers continue to grow and now draw from all
around the world. The pharmacists remain in constant demand for
the 131 years of health and product knowledge they've inherited.
The location and people have changed over the years, but the goal
has remained the same: superior and personal service for each
customer's total well being.
It was out of this sense of history and mission that Qaiyum and
his son Anthony founded Smallflower.com in 1998. They saw the need
for an expanded vision of health on the Internet. Their
challenge was to meld the Old World approach and knowledge of Merz
Apothecary with the New World technology of the Web without losing
the vision and character that make Merz Apothecary special.
They've met that challenge. Today Merz Apothecary is a Chicago
Landmark and a Mecca for people wanting unique natural products
for their bodies. |
